Guide to Specimen Submissions
As much relevant history as possible must be provided with the
specimen to ensure all factors are taken into consideration in
making the final diagnosis and recommendations. The laboratory
pathologists will report their findings, diagnoses, and
recommendations for control (if applicable), in a written report.
Reports will be made only to the submitter or their designate;
other requests will require permission from the submitter.
In as many cases as possible, we try to report directly to the
livestock owner's own veterinarian. The practitioner usually
knows the farmer, his level of management and the environmental
conditions. It is most important that the practising veterinarian
interpret the laboratory findings and report to the animal owner,
taking into account his own knowledge of the farm.
If a particular result is required urgently, please telephone
before submitting the specimen; discussion with the pathologist
will often provide a lead or even solution to the case.
Preliminary results are available often within a day or two,
sometimes less, by telephoning the AHC. The FAX machine will be
used, where possible to speed up reporting.
We are unable to accept animals for cremation. The permit
granted by the Ministry of Environment, Lands, and Parks does not
permit the incineration of carcasses for outside agencies.
