Avian Influenza and Human Health

The risk to people’s health from this outbreak remains low.

Several people with direct and prolonged exposure to poultry infected with avian influenza have reported very mild symptoms, including pink eye, headache and cough, to local health authorities.

Test results confirmed that two people were infected with avian influenza. These cases were a result of a breach of the safety equipment they were wearing. These people have since fully recovered.

There is no evidence of human to human transmission. The people who have had symptoms to date have had direct and prolonged exposure to poultry infected with avian influenza and contaminated materials.

This is not the same virus that recently caused serious human illness in Asia.
