Sheep Bot Fly
Host: Sheep, Goats
Description of Injurious Stages and Damage
Greyish flies about 15 millimetres long deposit living maggots in the nostrils
of sheep. Much harm is done to sheep by the larvae moving and feeding in the
nasal passageways and sinuses of the head (sometimes called "gid" or
"worm-in-the-head"). Sheep under attack from bot flies will run,
gather in groups with heads down, or rub their noses on the ground to prevent
egg-laying.
Summary of Life History
The sheep bot fly is common wherever sheep are raised in B.C. The larvae live
in the nasal passages and sinuses of the head for about 10 months. When fully
grown they are sneezed out upon the ground and in a short time change into the
pupal stage. In a few weeks the adults emerge and the life cycle is repeated.
It is believed that there is one generation per year.
Control Recommendations
Apply ivermectin (0.08% ready-to-use oral drench) following label instructions.
