Apple Mealybug
Phenacoccus aceris (Signoret)

Adult apple mealybugs

Cherries (L) stunted by little cherry disease (note apple mealybug egg mass in cluster)

Life Cycle: Overwinter as nymphs on host and become active in May. Eggs laid June-July, nymphs present July-October, then they overwinter. One generation per year.

Monitoring: Examine trees for presence of cottony masses

Hosts: Fruit trees, ornamental trees and shrubs.

Comments: Apple mealybugs transmit the virus that causes little cherry disease. Adults are yellow to orange in colour and covered with a granular, white waxy material. Eggs are yellow and found inside masses of white, cottony wax. Immature forms (crawlers) are oval, flattened and yellow with red eyes. They can be confused with the crawler stage of scale insects but the latter do not have red eyes.

Body length: Adult - 3.0mm; Mature nymph - 2.8mm
