Pear Rust Mite
Epitrimerus pyri (Nalepa)

Pear rust mites feeding on pear leaf

Russeted pears (center and right) caused by pear rust mite feeding

Life Cycle: Overwinter as adult females on host, becoming active when buds open. Several generations are produced per year.

Monitoring: Ten days to two weeks after petal-fall examine 50 fruitlets from 10 trees for russeting on stems and calyx ends. Repeat in two weeks. Monitor leaves using the same sampling and leaf brushing techniques used for European red mites.

Hosts: Pear.

Comments: Pear rust mites are very difficult to see without a hand lens. They are rusty white to yellow in colour, broad at the front and tapering to the rear (typical shape of rust mites). Infested leaves and fruit will become bronzed and russeted, respectively, very quickly.

Body length: Adult - 0.17mm; Mature nymph - 0.15mm
