Control of Insect and Related Pests of Livestock and Poultry in British Columbia

Poultry Lice

Host: Poultry

Description of Injurious Stages and Damage

Various species of biting lice on poultry injure the fowls by feeding on the surface of the skin, not by sucking blood. The presence of lice causes loss of appetite, prevents normal rest and generally results in unhealthy birds. Egg production falls off. Infested chicks and hens may die.

Summary of Life History

All poultry lice live on their hosts throughout their lives. Eggs are attached to the feathers. The time required to complete one generation varies for the species, but in general this is only a few weeks in summer. There are many generations each year.

Control Recommendations

Lice - carbaryl (5% ready-to-use dust, 0.5% spray), malathion (4% ready-to-use dust, 0.5% spray), rotenone dust, tetrachlorvinphos (0.5-1% spray).
