Rhizopus Rot of Peach

This post-harvest disease consists of large masses of black-grey fungus extending outward from the fruit in a whisker-like effect. One diseased peach in a container can infect many other fruits in a few days. Because this fungus is a wound parasite, breaks in the skin favour disease development.

Cultural Control

  1. Avoid bruising and skin puncture when picking and transporting fruit.
  2. Keep fruit cool after harvest.

Chemical Control

  1. Apply Pristine (boscalid + pyraclostrobin) up to 1 day before harvest.
  2. Allisan (dichloran) is registered for use as a post-harvest fruit spray or dip. Treated fruit should be placed in a cool room. The use of chlorine in hydrocooling water followed by an Allisan (dichloran) fruit dip is even more effective. Peaches treated with Allisan should not be left in direct sunlight or some skin shrivel may occur.
