Youth Development Programs (and 4-H Program)

Program Goal

"Through leadership and training programs, the BC Ministry of Agriculture Youth Development Programs enables youth and volunteers to increase their contribution to communities and society" - to enhance long-term job creation for the present and future generation.

  • Enhancing the skills, development and technology transfer of volunteers.
  • Build self-confidence and marketable skills for young people through practical, hands-on programming that encourages "learn to do by doing".
  • Increase knowledge, citizenship, leadership and personal development of youth and volunteers.
  • Enhance the profile of youth development and 4-H Program and its contribution to the community.
  • Increase agriculture awareness in 4-H Program and community.
  • Promotes careers in agriculture.

 

Description

Provide agricultural awareness and leadership training opportunities for over 2,500 youth in British Columbia, and 600 adult volunteer leaders, enrolled in the 4-H program; plus many other volunteers, alumni and sponsors.

British Columbia's youth between the ages of 6-21, from farm, rural non-farm, and urban communities.

B.C. 4-H - BC Ministry of Agriculture Relationship

Administration, management, promotion and sponsorship/fund raising is primarily a Provincial 4-H Council responsibility. Volunteer training, program delivery, and publication / audio-visual material is primarily a Ministry responsibility.

4-H Projects

4-H members may be enrolled in various projects learning basic skills: Beef, Dairy, Horse, Dairy Goat, Sheep, Swine, Llama, Rabbit, Dog, Poultry, Marketing, Clothing, Foods, Woolcraft, Crafts, Honey Bee, Leathercraft, Field Crops, Photography, Small Engines, Tractor, Junior Leadership, Aquaculture, Agroforestry, Environment, Agriculture Awareness, and Self Determined

 

4-H Programs

4-H Programs are many and varied and occur at various levels including club, district, regional, provincial, inter-provincial, national and international. Programs vary from exchanges, to conferences to competitions. A communications program including public speaking, educational displays and demonstrations occurs annually. A 4-H Farm Safety Program to raise the awareness of farm safety and reduce farm accidents for rural youth and farm families is currently underway. An agriculture career program is available to all youth each odd year (2011, 2013, 2015).
