The main purpose of this Act is to make sure that workers in British Columbia receive at least minimum standards of wages and terms of employment. The legislation sets out basic entitlements for employees and obligations for employers. The Act serves to promote fair treatment of employees and employers. The Act gives a definition of "farm labour contractor". It also sets up a fair and efficient means of resolving disputes concerning wages and other entitlements under the Act, or terms and conditions of employment which exceed those set out in the act. The Act requires that employers display poster (available from local Employment Standards Branch offices) showing employees' rights in each workplace in locations where all employees can read it.
