Environmental Protection

General Information

The long-term well-being of farms and ranches depends on good quality soil, water, air and other natural resources. In order to preserve these resources good farm management needs to include protection of the environment. Although pesticides can be a help to the environment when they are used carefully and wisely, they may also cause environmental problems when not used according to all label instructions. The main environmental concerns related to pesticides are soil, water, or air pollution and damage to non target organisms including plants, birds, wildlife, fish, and crops. The main causes of pollution or non-target damage are: pesticides inappropriately applied, spray or vapour drift, spills, backflow, and improper disposal of chemicals or containers.

There are many agricultural related environmental regulations and farm management practices that enhance environmental values. However, the most beneficial action a grower can take regarding the pesticides they use is to only use pesticides according to label directions. Labels are gradually being revised to include more environmental protection measures, to reduce the amounts applied where appropriate, and to include more safety instructions for human protection. Following label instructions and implementing best pesticide management practices on your farm protects the environment, keeps your farm safe for your family, reduces urban/rural pesticide conflicts and enhances your industry’s reputation.

Consider assessing the pesticide management practices on your farm by participating in the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) program. The BC Agriculture Council’s EFP program includes an evaluation of pesticide and pest management practices on your farm. Other practices it examines are manure management, compost handling and storage, wood waste, soil amendments, petroleum storage, etc. It is a comprehensive program that is confidential, prioritizes any identified issues, suggests actions to improve environmental management on your farm, and provides an opportunity for you to access funds to help make improvements. The BC Agriculture Council’s web site has more information on the EFP program:
