Pesticide Laws and Regulations

Applicator Responsibility

Legislation is established to protect applicators, bystanders, farm workers, consumers, and the environment (i.e. water, land, air, organisms, etc.). Pesticide applicators are responsible for complying with federal, provincial, regional and municipal laws. In some situations, both the farmer and employee (pesticide applicator) have shared the responsibility and repercussions when laws were broken. There are special laws about: pesticides use, pesticide availability, disposal, transport, storage, protecting fish and fish habitat, as well as protecting migratory birds and other wildlife. The main legislation that regulates pesticides is summarized in this section.
