Term Definition
Awn An extension at the tip of a floret or a glume in some grasses.
Basal At the base of a plant or plant structure. Often refers to the leaf arrangement of a rosette
Bract A modified leaf, reduced in size.
Bunch Grass A grass having the characteristic growth habit of forming a bunch; lacking stolons or rhizomes.
Clasping Referring to the base of the leaves, partially or entirely surrounding the stem.
cm Centimeters.
Disk Flower Small tube-like flower or floret found in the Sunflower family.

Floret A small flower in the Grass or Sunflower family.
Forb A broad-leafed herbaceous plant.
Glumes A pair of bracts found at the base of spikelet in grasses.
Grass Members of the plant family Poaceae.
Herbaceous Non-woody plant growth.
Herbivore An animal that subsists principally or entirely on plants or plant materials.
Inflorescence Floral arrangement of a plant.

Term Definition
Leaflet One section of a compound leaf.
Lobed Refers to an undulating leaf margin. Lobing varies from shallow to deep.
m Meters.
Mesic Characterized by moderately moist conditions; neither dry nor wet.
Moist Slightly wetter than mesic and drier than wet.
Node Place on the stem from where leaves grow. Nodes are separated by internodes.
Palatability The relish with which a particular species or plant part is consumed by an animal.
Panicle A branched inflorescence in which the flowers or spikelets are attached by flower stalks to branches of the rachis.

Term Definition
Rachis The central axis of an inflorescence or a compound leaf.
Ray Flower A flower or floret with a flat, strap-shaped petal, found in the Sunflower family.
Rhizome A horizontal underground stem, usually sending out roots and aboveground shoots from the nodes.
Riparian Referring to or relating to areas adjacent of water or influenced by free water associated with streams or rivers on geologic surfaces occupying the lowest position on a watershed.
Shrub A plant that has persistent, woody stems and a relatively low growth habit, and that generally produces several basal shoots. It differs from a tree by its low stature (generally less than 5 meters, or 16 feet).
Sod Vegetation which grows so as to form a mat of soil and vegetation.
Spikelet A unit of the inflorescence in grasses, usually consisting of two outer glumes and one or more florets.
Stolon A horizontal stem which grows along the surface of the soil and roots at the nodes.

Terminal At the end of a stem or branch.
Tiller The asexual development of a new plant from a meristematic region of the parent plant.
Tufted In a clump.
Ungulate A hoofed animal, including ruminants but also horses, tapir, elephants, rhinoceroses and swine.
