Irrigation Management BMP's - Information for Industry
June 2011

The Growing Forward Canada–BC Environmental Farm Plan Program complements and enhances the current environmental stewardship practices of producers. Led by the province’s agriculture and agri-food industry, this initiative encourages producers from all parts of the province to adopt Beneficial Management Practices (BMP’s) that enhance agricultural sustainability and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment.

Environmental farm planning is a no charge, confidential, voluntary process available to producers to identify both environmental strengths and potential risks on their farms. As appropriate, it includes a prioritized action plan to reduce the risks. The producer may be eligible to apply for cost-sharing incentives under the Growing Forward Beneficial Management Practice Program to address environmental risks that have been identified in the completed farm plan.

There are a number of items that are available for cost-shared funding. The various Practices Codes are:

1801
Irrigation equipment modification/improvement to increase water and nutrient use efficiency
1802
Climate stations or improved irrigation management
1804
  Irrigation infrastructure improvement - Forage
1805
Irrigation system improvement - extensive systems
2901
Consultative services to produce an irrigation management plan with recommendations that include a certified design layout, material list
2902
  Water management planning

To see more details about the Practice Codes, view the list of Beneficial Management Practices for Irrigation Management for the Program Year April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012 - which are subject to annual revision during the life of the Growing Forward Agreement.
