Spraying Etiquette

Complaints to the Ministry of Environment about tree fruit growers spraying on the highways and near homes have prompted us to come up with some guidelines for you to follow in your spraying habits.

  • If you need to spray near homes let the residents know. Leave a note or a message on their answering machine a few days prior to spraying. Avoid spraying the building by spraying the side away from the home or use a hand gun. Remember the re-entry period for most pesticides is 24 hours and for the more toxic ones 48 hours. This is particularly important where homes are located on the orchard. Tree removal may be considered in some cases. Consider advising these people of your seasonal spray program.
  • When spraying near roads and highways, avoid spraying the road or highway. Close the boom on the road side. Make sure that you avoid any people or vehicles on the roadway. Spray in the early morning or during times of low activity on the road.
  • Remove any empty pesticide bags or containers near your spray filling area at all times, but particularly if accessible to school children or the public.
  • Avoid spraying when the wind exceeds 7km/hr.
