Success™ now registered in Canada
On May 1, 2001, Dow AgroSciences announced that Success™ (spinosad)
480 SC was granted registration for control of obliquebanded
leafroller on apple. Product is expected to be available for this
season. Success is a new chemistry that received the U.S.
President's Green Chemistry Award because of its combination of
efficacy and human and environmental safety. It currently is
registered for use in over 170 crops in the U.S. Further development
of Success™ in Canada will be through the User Requested Minor Use
Label Expansion Program (URMULE).
Spinosad, the active ingredient, is derived from the fermentation
of a naturally occurring bacterium. The LD50 is 5000 mg/kg which
means it is very safe compared to conventional organophosphate (diazinon,
azinphos-methyl, phosmet) and carbamate (carbaryl) insecticides.
Success™ does not harm common predaceous insects such as ladybird
beetles, pirate bugs, lacewings etc. or spiders, and does not affect
plant-feeding or predatory mites. Field research by the author has
shown Success™ will reduce the prevalence of pansy spot and
tentiform leafminer injury when applied at pink.
The recommended label rate is 182 mL/ha applied in 1000 L
water/ha or less depending on tree size (maximum of 546 mL or 3
applications per season). Repeat application in 7-10 days if
necessary. Do not apply within 7 days of harvest. The product kills
by stomach and contact, so thorough application is essential for
optimum performance. Success™ should be rotated with other
insecticide chemistries to prevent the development of resistance.
Persons should not re-enter the treated areas within 14 days
after application to carry out hand thinning, summer pruning or
harvesting without personal protective equipment. For other
activities, do not re-enter treated areas within 12 hours after
application.
